SRD scams are increasing across South Africa. This page helps you spot common tricks, verify official links, and protect your ID, phone number, and banking details.
Independent informational site. We do not process SRD applications, status checks, banking changes, or appeals. All SRD actions happen on official SASSA platforms.

Only One Official SRD System Exists
For the SRD grant, official actions should only happen on verified government domains. If a link is outside these domains, treat it as suspicious until you verify it.
Red flag: Any website, WhatsApp message, SMS, or social media post asking for SRD details outside these domains is not official.
Quick Safety Checks (Before You Click Anything)
- Check the exact domain: the official SRD portal is srd.sassa.gov.za (not “sassa-srd…”, not “srdstatus…”, not “.com”).
- Ignore urgency: scams push “last chance”, “urgent”, “today only”, or “final notice”.
- No fees: SRD processes do not require “registration fees”, “airtime”, “admin fees”, or “release fees”.
- Never share OTPs: an OTP is for you to enter on an official portal — not for someone else.
- Be careful with “helpers”: anyone offering “fast approval” or “guaranteed payout” is a scammer.
If you are unsure, open the SRD portal manually by typing it in your browser: srd.sassa.gov.za
Common SRD Scams You Should Know About
These are patterns we see repeatedly. Use the headings below to match what happened to you.
Phishing websites pretending to be SASSA
Fake websites copy the look of official pages and ask for your ID number, phone number, OTP, or banking details. They often use slightly changed web addresses or extra words.
- Red flags: spelling mistakes, unusual pop-ups, or “confirm OTP to release funds”.
- Safe action: close the page and open srd.sassa.gov.za manually.
Fake grant increase / “bonus” announcements
Scams promise “extra SRD money”, “bonus payouts”, or “new registration” and push you to click a link quickly. Official changes are announced through official government channels and the official SASSA website.
- Red flags: “Claim now”, “limited spots”, “pay Rxx to unlock”.
- Safe action: verify via sassa.gov.za (not social media forwards).
Fake officials (using names/photos of public figures)
Scammers reuse photos, edited videos, or fake “government letters” to look official. Images and logos are easy to copy — the domain is harder to fake.
- Red flags: screenshots of “approval lists”, “minister said pay now”, “banking verification fee”.
- Safe action: ignore the post and check only the official portals.
WhatsApp / SMS “agents” offering fast approval
A common scam is a WhatsApp number claiming to “help” with SRD approval, appeals, or payment release. They usually ask for money, airtime, or personal details.
- Red flags: “Send your ID + OTP”, “Pay a small fee”, “I will fix your status”.
- Safe action: do not respond — use the official SRD portal or official contact channels.
Malware links disguised as SRD forms or “apps”
Some links try to make you install an app/file that steals information or takes over accounts. SRD actions should be completed in a browser on the official portal.
- Red flags: “Download this SRD app”, “install to check status”, strange file downloads.
- Safe action: do not install anything — use srd.sassa.gov.za.
How to Verify a Link Is Real (Simple Checks)
- Look at the domain (not the page design). The official SRD domain is srd.sassa.gov.za.
- Watch for extra words like “srd-check”, “sassa-grant”, “status-now”, or “payments”.
- Avoid shortened links (bit.ly / tinyurl) unless you can confirm where they lead.
- Open the portal directly by typing it into your browser instead of trusting forwarded links.
